This is a very rare Vetta ‘Cronografo’ made for the Italian market by the Wyler watch company. Without exception their most coveted watches are the range of Valjoux 22 ‘waterproof’ chronographs, some are found in 'Ermetico' watertight cases and some in ’Spillman’ waterproof cases, this being the latter and in it’s completely original and unrestored condition. The watch boasts its original three colour dial, bearing a Tachymeter and Telemeter ring with beautiful gold gilt detailing.
The trusty Valjoux 22 movement is again completely original, The Valjoux 22 is a high grade 18,000 per hour with 42 hours reserve and was so successful it ran from 1914 to 1974, and is very highly regarded by collectors. The case is a ’Spillman’ made stainless steel waterproof example, Spillman made cases really are the ‘cream of the crop’ of period chronograph cases, the screw back and large ‘waterproof pusher really do make this stand out, as does the size, at 37mm without the crown.
The watch dates to the mid 1940’s, this particular example was bought from the original owner who picked it up at the end of WW2 and took it back to Australia. A remarkable piece with remarkable history.
