If you’re remotely into Rolex and their four-digit subs, you’ll likely know that their younger and pluckier sibling Tudor has also made some special watches. Although the 7928 wasn’t the first, it’s certainly the most revered and well-known of the Tudor Submariner lineup.
In 7928's eleven-year production run, a total of seven different known dial variations exist. The present example boasts the MKV dial, with a gilt chapter ring, silver print texts, and 'T Swiss T' signature, and what a watch it is. The dial is gorgeous; there is no fading on the texts, and the lume on the markers and hands has gained an even, rich pumpkin patina. They glow brightly under UV before fading rapidly. The case remains in great shape with strong lugs and crown guards. The original 'Long 5' insert has faded to an attractive dark grey hue, completing the iconic 7928 look.
We paired the watch with these tan straps from our friends at The Strap Tailor. It has just been serviced and is running well at at -5 s/d, 295 amps, with a 0.4 ms beat error. The value that these late 7928s offer is unrivalled. A similar configuration 5513 with a long 5 insert would easily cost £3k more and is easier to find.
