Originally founded in 1946 by Émile Gagnan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau, La Spirotechnique is a French diving equipment manufacturer renowned for its groundbreaking innovations in scuba diving. In addition to their range of masks, fins, and regulators, Spirotechnique also collaborated with legendary watchmakers such as Auriscoste, Squale, and Doxa to release a series of co-branded dive watches. These watches have gained a cult following among collectors thanks to their distinctive designs and rarity.
The Triton "Spirotechnique" was originally introduced in 1963, designed by the retired French Colonel Jean René Parmentier. The watch features a proprietary 12 o'clock "protected crown" design with the articulating lug. Manufactured by Dodane in France and sold exclusively in Spirotechnique shops, this watch was in fact briefly the most expensive diver at the time (more than the Rolex Submariner / Blancpain Fifty Fathoms!).
It is, incidentally, one of the coolest watches ever made. The watch we have here has led a very easy life, and is perhaps the best example we have ever come across. The dial and insert are perfect, with virtually no marks or blemishes. The tritium lume on the markers and hands have aged to a deep, pumpkin patina, matching that on the bezel. The original "roulette" date wheel is present, and the tonneau case has retained its original factory chamfers and finishing.
The watch came to us in great health, running flawlessly at +5 s/d, 285 amps, with a 0.4 ms beat error. It comes on a pair of rare original tropic straps. It's impossible not to be the coolest person in the room with this thing on your wrist.
