For many watch enthusiasts, the watch-collecting journey starts with a Seiko - they do not forget the first time they put on an SKX007. However, Seiko divers are not simple "beginner watches" - the brand made some of the most robust, innovative, and wearable designs in the 60s and 70s.
The Seiko 6105-8110/9 is the third generation of the 6105 range debuting around 1970 and ending in 1977. This watch was made famous by Martin Sheen in the film Apocalypse Now hence the nickname Captain Willard, the character he played in the movie. The use in the film was an accurate representation of the watches popularity among US special forces and U.D.T team members during the Vietnam War, check out Watches of Espionage's instagram account to see numerous examples.
The 8110/9 (the 0 at the end means Japanese market and the 9 US market) was the first Seiko to utilise an asymmetrical case and integrated crown guards which is now common in todays line up. This piece has managed to survive the last 50 years without any real wrist time, Going from draw to draw the watch remains in unworn condition with a few handling marks on the caseback. The dial and is flawless, the hands he the faintest speckles of oxidation that cant be seen with the naked eye. The original waffle strap is also still present.
