The 16800 is, in the Submariner range, the true crossroads between the old and the new. It blends a vintage aesthetic with all the mod cons one expects and sometimes takes for granted on a modern sub. The uni-directional bezel, sapphire glass, and quick set date were all new features when this watch was released in 1979. This cocktail of upgrades saw a surge in popularity and paved the way for the Submariner to be one of the go-to dive watches for the everyday person, not just for people looking for a tool watch.
This example dates to 1986 and features a gloss dial. The tritium markers and hands have gained an even, creamy patina, unusual for gloss 16800s and absolutely stunning. The dial itself show a gentle and attractive tropicalisation. The case has been polished before but remains nice and full, with only light marks throughout. The full link bracelet has minimal stretch. The clasp is a service replacement from 2002 (DT code).
The watch came to us in great health; the movement runs at 0 s/d, 285 amps, with 0 beat error. A super cool neo-vintage sub ready for its new home.
