The 16800 is, in the Submariner range, the true crossroads between the old and the new. It blends a vintage aesthetic will all the mod cons one expects and sometimes takes for granted on a modern sub. The uni-directional bezel, sapphire glass, and quick set date were all new features when this watch was released in 1979. This cocktail of upgrades saw a surge in popularity and paved the way for the Submariner to be one of the go to dive watches for the every day person, not just for people looking for a tool watch.
This example dates to 1984 and was sold in 1986 after spending two years in a shop window in Texas. The tritium markers and hands have gained a rich pumpkin patina, unusual for gloss 16800s and absolutely stunning. The date wheel has also aged to a creamy hue, matching the warmth of the dial. The watch has been worn and enjoyed, but remains honest and strong. There are light marks on the case and the bracelet, and the bracelet has mild stretch. The clasp is a service replacement from 1995.
The watch came to us in great health; the movement runs at 0 s/d, 280 amps, with 0 beat error. It comes with its original guarantee. The original papers and box are still with the watch. 16800s are fantastic watches in general, but the pumpkin colours on this watch really set it apart.
