The 6536-1 is a fascinating reference and one that packs a lot of changes into a four year production period, this is why it still remains one of the most collectible Submariners.
Technically the 6536 started life in 1954 as a transitional reference 6536/8, this was a hybrid of the 6538 'Big Crown' and the 6536. The double reference has the same dial layout as this first iteration of the 6536-1 - known as the 'Red Depth.'
In 1957 Rolex made a few subtle changes to the 6536 model, they painted the second hand white for more visibility and applied the 'Submariner' name directly to the galvanic paint (previously it was printed onto the clear lacquer that gave the black dial its glossy finish and helped protect it.) Interestingly the depth rating typography above this continued to be printed on top of the lacquer, hence fading more than the 'Gilt' wording.
This particular example is incredibly well preserved, featuring a completely original dial and handset, both displaying strong geiger counter readings. At some point in the watches past, its seconds hand was repainted, returning it to a highly legible state whilst retaining its intact radium lume. The case overall is in superb condition, seeing only a light polish previously and maintaining full and even lugs. Of particular note is the original 'Brevet' crown - still present with the watch and the insert, a 'Long 5' with white triangle would have been fitted later, likely around the early 60s.
The Gay Frères fixed rivet stamped 2/58 with 64 end links is in great condition and will accommodate an 18.5cm wrist. The movement has recently been checked over and is running respectably for a watch of this age. +8 s/d, 260 amps with a beat error of 1.1.
We have sold a few 6536's over the last year or so, this dial has to be the best we have ever seen, its mesmerising. Every time it catches the light you notice something different, another detail, we have found ourselves just staring at it for minutes at a time. So a word of warning, if you do buy this watch, it may affect your productivity.
