We’ve been waiting a few months for a good gilt Sub—and this week, we have two! The ref. 5513 is one of Rolex’s longest-running references, with a production span of nearly three decades. However, gilt dials were only produced during the first few years (up to around 1966–67), and production volumes during this period were significantly lower than in the later matte dial era. Gilt dials are estimated to account for only about 4% of all 5513 and 5512 models produced.
Rolex gilt dials from this period were made using a galvanic process, where the text and minute track were etched onto a brass backing plate and left in relief, while the rest of the dial surface was chemically treated to achieve that deep, glossy black finish. The result is a striking contrast that gives gilt dials their signature mirror-like appearance and incredible depth—something that has become highly prized among collectors today.
This particular example sits at the tail end of the gilt dial era and features the non–chapter ring “Bart Simpson” dial, named for the resemblance of the coronet to Bart’s spiky hairstyle. The case is in great shape, having seen only minimal polishing, primarily noticeable around the crown guards. The dial is in good condition: the puffy, glowing tritium markers are all present, though the 6, 7, and 8 markers show some spotting. The hands, while slightly lighter than the dial (a common trait), are correct and have not been relumed. The long 5 bezel insert has aged to a greyish black, with the original pip partially intact. The correct no-dot crown is also still present. The original 7205/58 rivet link bracelet, stamped 4/66, remains with the watch and shows only mild stretch. It will accommodate a 19.5cm wrist.
The watch has just been serviced and is running at +5 s/d, 275 amplitude, with a beat error of 0.3 ms. We believe this offering represents exceptional value—positioning it as one of the most affordably priced gilt-dial Submariners available on the market today.
