The ‘Great White’ version of the Sea-Dweller 1665, when unveiled, offered one noticeable modification compared to its predecessors: the addition of the conspicuous white 'Sea-Dweller' script on the dial, an attribute that earned the watch its 'Great White' sobriquet.
The MK4 variation is the last member of the 1665 Sea-Dwellers. Starting around the mid to late 6m serial mark and running to the end in 83.
A watch bred for exploration; the watch doesn't shy away from touting its robust construction. The well proportioned 40mm stainless steel case, complete with a helium escape valve, is ready to face the most gruelling underwater exploits. The valve, an innovation pioneered by Rolex, was designed to allow helium to escape during decompression, thus preventing the crystal from popping off. It is, undoubtedly, one of the key elements that underscore the watch’s hardy character.
The watch has been polished in the past but the case remains full and thick. The dial has a wonderful patina as do the hands, the original silver date wheel has a gentle fade to it also. The bezel is our favourite feature, a vibrant blue hue has formed over time giving this piece a unique look. The 93150/555 bracelet is in great condition, its one link short but these can be sourced if necessary. The clasp code dates it to 1986. The watch will accommodate a 19cm wrist
The movement was serviced in the last few years and is still running impeccably at +2 s/d, 290 amps with a beat error of 0.2. The watch has passed a 5 bar pressure test comfortably.
In the realm of Rolex, few models rival the desirability of the 'Great White' - a watch that, over the years, has acquired an aura of fascination and reverence among collectors and enthusiasts. It's a watch that epitomises the time when Rolex were pushing exploration-focused watches, a part of their lineage that continues to inspire their present and future endeavours.
