The Rolex 16660 Sea-Dweller is a testament to Rolex's long-standing legacy of creating pieces that marry superior craftsmanship with technical mastery.

The 16660 was a game-changer when it was first introduced in 1978. Made alongside its predecessor, the 1665, the 16660 took the functionality of the Sea-Dweller lineup to another level; now with an improved water-resistance rating of 1220 meters thanks to its robust case design, enhanced helium escape valve, and a sapphire crystal.

In the first half of the 16660 production, Rolex used matte dials (which we also have for sale). In 1983/84, gloss dials were introduced, like the example we see here. However, Rolex did not realise that these early gloss 16660 dials were prone to degradation, in the form of cracking or spotting on the lacquer layer. Whilst born as a manufacturing defect, this phenomenon in fact led to some of the most visually striking gloss Rolex dials ever - showcasing a "spider" or "stardust" effect.

The present example retains the original early gloss dial which demonstrates a stunning stardust/spider pattern. This is only complemented by the tritium markers and hands which have gained a dark creamy patina. The case is in superb shape, with pronounced crown guards and lugs. The original full-link 93160/592 bracelet with the original "I" clasp is in equally good shape and has zero stretch.

The watch has been freshly checked over and is running beautifully at +6 s/d, 265 amps, with a beat error of 0.4 ms. The original box is included. These examples are exceedingly rare, especially as Rolex would always replace it with a service dial if it was ever sent to them. Thankfully, this one is well preserved after 40 years, ready for its next journey.
