The GMT Master is one of the world’s most iconic watch designs. Originally created for airline pilots, it now graces the wrists of collectors and enthusiasts alike. The reference 1675 we have here was first produced in 1959 and remained in production until 1980.
Over its 20+ years of production, Rolex introduced numerous changes to the 1675, from the movement and case to the dials (transitioning from gilt to matte) and even the bezel design. It's a fascinating reference and a favourite amongst collectors.
Among these variations, 1675 with gilt dials were produced only between 1959 and 1967, and found in much smaller numbers than their matte counterparts. Despite the short production time, Rolex experimented with many dial and case designs, which have been extensively studied and categorised by scholars and collectors over time.
The present example is one of the best 1675s we have ever seen. The watch features a beautiful "Type C Non-Chapter Ring" dial. The original markers and hands both aged to a rich creamy colour, and glow brightly under UV light. The case is immense - it has been polished before but no more than once or twice. The original thick font red back insert is equally attractive, with the red portion gaining an even coppery patina and the blue portion having an even fade.
Originally sold in 1967 in Hong Kong, the watch comes with its inner and outer boxes, instruction manual, tags, booklets, wallet, original guarantee, and the original COSC papers. It comes on a C&I rivet bracelet in great condition. The watch runs perfectly at -5 s/d, 260 amps, and 0 beat error. Gilt 1675s are something else and to find a set like this is really as rare as hens' teeth.
