The GMT Master is one of the world’s most iconic watch designs. Originally created for airline pilots, it now graces the wrists of collectors and enthusiasts alike. The reference 1675 we have here was first produced in 1959 and remained in production until 1980.
Over its 20+ years of production, Rolex introduced numerous changes to the 1675, from the movement and case to the dials (transitioning from gilt to matte) and even the bezel design. These updates give 1675s from different eras distinct characters.
Among these variations, 1675 with gilt dials were produced only between 1959 and 1967, and therefore found in smaller numbers than their matte counterparts. Despite the short production time, Rolex experimented with many dial and case designs, which have been extensively studied and categorised by scholars and collectors over time.
This particular example dates back to 1963 and features a 'Type C Non-Chapter Ring' dial in the rarely seen 'Wide Swiss' variation. This refers to the 'Swiss T<25' text spanning five minute hashes at the bottom, rather than the more common three. Over the years, the dial has developed a 'tropical' patina. The hour markers retain their original tritium lume, glowing brightly under UV light, as do the second and GMT hands. The lume on the hour and minute hands were stabilised in the past. The 'broad pointed crown guards (PCG)' case is in excellent condition. The original red-back bezel insert has faded beautifully to shades of sky blue and copper.
The watch is paired with a USA jubilee bracelet and has been freshly serviced. It runs perfectly at 0 s/d, 260 amps, and 0.2 beat error.
A lovely example of a gilt 1675 that will sit proudly in any collection.
