The GMT-Master is one of the world’s most iconic watch designs. Originally created for airline pilots, it now graces the wrists of collectors and enthusiasts alike. The reference 1675 featured here was first produced in 1959 and remained in production until 1980.
Over its 20+ years of production, Rolex introduced numerous changes to the 1675—ranging from the movement and case to the dials (transitioning from gilt to matte) and even the bezel design. These updates give 1675s from different eras distinct characters.
This particular example features the most well-known matte dial variant: the MK1, nicknamed the ‘Long E’—easily recognized by the elongated middle bar of the letter "E" in ROLEX. This dial had a long production run and appears in watches from 1967 to early 1972 serials.
The case is very thick, showing minimal signs of polishing, with particularly full crown guards. The dial is in excellent condition—the markers have aged to a pale cream hue, indicating significant sun exposure. The original hands match the dial, and the GMT hand has two very minor cracks in the lume. The red-back bezel has faded heavily, complementing the dial perfectly. The date wheel is also correct, featuring open 6s and 9s.
The watch is fitted with a 1975-stamped C&I stretch rivet bracelet, suitable for wrists up to 19 cm. The movement has just been serviced and is performing well at -3s/day, 285 amplitude, and a beat error of 0.0.
A great example of one of the most wearable vintage watches ever created.
