The Rolex Explorer II was, for a long time, an underappreciated gem in the world of vintage Rolex collecting. That has changed in recent years, with early models such as the 1655 'Steve McQueen' and 16550 now commanding considerable attention among collectors—along with an ever-increasing price tag.

The 16550 was produced for a brief four years before being succeeded by the 16570, which was introduced in 1989. The 16570 then enjoyed a solid 22-year production run before being replaced by its 42mm successor. During this period, Rolex implemented numerous design changes across the dial, case, and bracelet.

The present example, dating to 2002, features a "Swiss Made" Super-Luminova dial but retains the desirable holed case and solid end links, allowing for easy strap changes. The case is in excellent condition, having recently undergone a professional polish that was executed flawlessly. Both the bracelet and case remain nearly unmarked since the polish. The dial is pristine, as are the hands—as you would expect. The original 78790A bracelet with a "DT" (2002) stamped clasp still has all its links and exhibits no sag.

The watch has just been serviced and is currently running at 0 s/d, 290 amplitude, with a 0.1 ms beat error. It comes with its original guarantee, sales tag with serial, chrono tag, and bezel protector.
