It’s hardly a secret that the Chicchi 16570 is one of our favourite Rolex references. It combines the practicality of a five-digit Rolex—with features such as a sapphire crystal, an independently adjustable hour hand, and the unique charm of a creamy patina that develops with time—something more commonly seen on four-digit references.
For a long time, the Explorer II was an underappreciated gem in the world of vintage Rolex collecting. That has changed in recent years, with early models such as the 1655 “Steve McQueen” and the 16550 now commanding considerable attention from collectors, along with ever-increasing price tags.
The 16550 was produced for only four years before being replaced in 1989 by the model we see here: the 16570. Over time, collectors have noticed that the tritium lume on the markers and hands of some tritium 16570s develops a wonderful creamy tone, earning the nickname “Chicchi di Mais” (“Corn Kernels”). In even rarer cases, the entire dial takes on a creamy hue due to changes in the lacquer.
The watch we have here is among the best Polar 16570s we’ve ever seen. While the case has been polished in the past, it hasn’t been touched for quite some time—the lugs and crown guards remain full and honest. The original full-link 93150 bracelet, with its “R”-stamped clasp, shows only minimal stretch. The star of the show, however, is the beautifully creamy dial paired with pumpkin-toned lume on the hands and markers. The movement arrived with us in perfect health, running at +5 s/d, 265 amps, and with zero beat error. Believe it or not, it looks even better in person.
