The Rolex Explorer has gained a large fan base over the last few years, before it was a model that was certainly overlooked!! Now people are stating to appreciate its rugged good looks. For us the previous 16550 is the ultimate reference of the Explorer II but good examples now command huge price tags.
This example is the rarest iteration of the 16570. The “Swiss” only dial was made for a slender 18 month period, but what does swiss only mean? Prior to Swiss only, Rolex printed Swiss - T≤ 25 on the bottom of the dial which denoted the markers were coated in Tritium, when Luminova came around in the late 90’s, Rolex started trialling it on a few models, to highlight this change, they printed swiss at the base of the dial. Shortly after however, Rolex decided to use the very latest synthetic paint available, Super Luminova as of 2000, this is why you see Swiss Made on all Rolex models since.
The watch is in superb condition, the case is super sharp and both the bezel and top of the case shows its original brushed finish. The X stamped 78790 made in 1999 still has its full links and very little stretch. The movement is still running very well, around -2 seconds a day with 245 amps.
The watch comes complete with its original box, booklets both swing tags, calendar and wallet. A lovely collectors set.
