The Rolex Explorer range was first introduced in 1953, the same year Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay scaled Mount Everest for the first time, wearing a white Oyster Perpetual, which of course was no coincidence.
The original 6350 reference featured Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and a 36mm case with a black dial, a combination that still lives on today almost 70 years later.
This particular 14270 reference was in production for 11 years, starting in 1989. Several tweaks were made to the dial, from blackout numbers to different lacquers and marker paints. The present example is an early solid case example, around 1994 Rolex got rid of the holed lugs, a hangover from the 1016 but retained the hollow end links.
The dial and hands are flawless and have started to turn from a white to a pale cream, the case itself is superb and extremely sharp. The bracelet is original and is stamped (V3) Mar 96 and retains its full links. The watch comes with its inner box, papers and booklets.
The watch came to us in great health and runs perfectly at -3 s/d, 285 amps, and 0.0 beat error.
As our founder Stef says, if he had to have one watch that does it all, it would be a tritium 14270.
