The Ref. 6305 was the Datejust that made the model the success it is today. With more selling than any other model in Rolex’s history and the first steel iteration ever made. Initially launched in 1945, the Datejust was a dressy watch that only came in solid gold or two-tone, not a watch for every day, and with such a high cost it wasn’t a huge seller. Rolex decided they needed to branch out and make the model more attainable.
Enter the 6305; a 36mm stainless steel watch with a rounded case back, a cyclops lens (yes, the previous models didn’t have a lens) which improves date legibility as well as radium filled spearhead markers and an engine turned bezel.
This particular example has some interesting features; with the 'Datejust' and date-wheel typography in red, earning it the moniker of 'Roulette' wheel (named after the casino game of the same name) which features even numbers in red and odd in black.
The standout feature however, has to be the 'Tropical' dial, it would have been a pearly white when new and has aged to a lovely warm yellow - making this piece truly stunning and an increasingly rare example.
The watch has recently been serviced and is still running to COSC standards, the bracelet is a slightly later US jubilee with 50 end links.
These have to be the ultimate steel Datejust in terms of importance and the tropical dial is a stand out feature that will spark up a conversation with any watch enthusiast.
