The Patek Philippe Ellipse is easily one of the most iconic designs to emerge from the 1970s. When it was first unveiled, it was unlike anything else in the world of watchmaking. At a time when traditional round dress watches, sport chronographs, and professional dive watches were being rolled out in full force, the seemingly simple Ellipse took an entirely different approach. Its case, inspired by the “Golden Ratio,” sits between a circle and a rectangle, creating a uniquely graceful oval form.
This example comes from the very end of the thirty one year production period, The case on this watch remains unpolished and exhibits hairline marks on the gold when under light, these can barely be seen when wearing. The dial has some extremely small white marks that can be seen in the close up photos but not with the eye. The watch has been fitted with a brand new Patek navy exotic leather strap and still retails is 18k gold buckle.
The movement came to us in great health, after a little regulation its running at -4 s/d, 280 amps and has a beat error of 0.2. Compared to the current 5738, these seem like an absolute bargain at well under half the retail price.
