For many, the Calatrava represents the pinnacle of dress watches: simple, elegant, and adorned with a beautifully decorated movement. This combination remains unbeatable, and the model continues to be sold in various sizes and dial configurations. The Calatrava was originally inspired by the Bauhaus principle of "form follows function," with a minimalist design created by David Penney. Remarkably, this concept has remained unchanged for over 90 years. The origin of the Calatrava’s name is equally intriguing.

Patek Philippe trademarked their logo toward the end of the 19th century—a logo that is now instantly recognisable. It is actually derived from the coat of arms used by the Calatrava Knights, or the Order of Calatrava, in the 12th century. This historical connection is the source of the Calatrava name, adding a layer of fascination to the watch's legacy.

The 5026, produced between 1997 and 2002, was part of Patek Philippe's late 90s overhaul of the Calatrava range. With movement upgrades and case design tweaks, these Calatravas were produced in very limited quantities, making them exceptionally rare.

The applied Breguet numerals and a variation of traditional Breguet hands, reminiscent of mid-century wristwatches, along with the off-centre subdial, make this reference stand out. Additionally, the exhibition caseback showcases the exquisite Cal. 240 automatic movement, elevating this Calatrava to a level above previous generations.

This watch is in superb condition and comes with its box, archive, and two straps with the original white gold buckle. The movement has been thoroughly checked and is running excellently at -3 seconds per day, with an amplitude of 295 and a beat error of 0.1.

A fantastic and rare piece, the 5026 truly distinguishes itself from the usual Calatrava, offering an exceptional addition to any discerning collector’s portfolio.
