The Memomatic was launched in 1969 and came in four different case designed and dial variations, The 166.071 being the most widely recognised and produced. This variant is part of the pilot line and shared its case shape with the Flight master and certain Seamaster's of the same era. At the time, this was the only auto alarm and calendar watch with a minute alarm, pretty impressive for the late 60's.
So how does it work? The top right pusher is the for the alarm, it has three setting positions, fully in is alarm off, second position, alarm activated, third is alarm setting. The micro pusher thats recessed into the case is for the date, the crown is used for winding, setting the time and in anti clockwise, setting the alarm time. The triangle on the alarm wheel is for the hours, the two lines for the minutes. Does that make sense? No? You're not alone!!
The watch has lived a good life with the usual wear marks visible, however, it hasn't ever seen a polishing wheel. The original brushed is still visible and the edges untouched. The correct 1170/174 bullet bracelet is still fully linked and can comfortably accommodate a 20cm wrist
The dial is mint, the lume plots are all intact. The hands have their tritium plots intact, the orange seconds hand has subtly lightened with time.
The watch was serviced last year and the movement remains in great health. -4s/d, 260 amps with 0.3 beat error. All the functions of the alarm of course work too.
