The Omega Constellation range was, in essence, Omega's answer to the Datejust. Originally released in 1948, it was offered as a limited production watch - the Centenary Chronometer, as it was then called. It proved so popular that Omega decided to keep making it. Omega created a collection of automatic chronometer watches in 1952 that would become the Constellation as we know it today.
The watch we have here, ref. 14393/4, dates back to 1961 and features a solid 18K gold case and a textured champagne dial, and what a watch it is. The design is simplistic at first glance, with a round case in a slim and elegant profile. However, a closer look reveals the details that set it apart; the solid gold applied indices feature Onyx inlays, the decorated lugs are reminiscent of 40s / 50s dress watch designs, and the constellation observatory medallion sits proudly on the caseback.
The watch is in incredible condition, with a spotless dial and extremely clean case. The watch came to us running healthily at +3 s/d, 260 amps, with a beat error of 0.2 ms. We have paired the watch with a green Saffiano leather strap. In the world of watch collecting that is dominated by sports models nowadays (we are guilty of it too), these dress watches remind us of the romance and nostalgia that vintage watches never fail to provide.
