In 1982, six years after the introduction of the superb 1832 Jumbo Ingenieur designed by Gérald Genta, IWC created a smaller and more affordable Ingenieur model— a true masterstroke in our opinion.

Genta was the driving force behind many iconic designs like the Royal Oak, Nautilus, and Octo, to name a few. His unique design language is evident in the Ingenieur. This watch, with its well-proportioned 34mm case, strikes the perfect balance—noticeable but not overbearing. The integrated bracelet, a nod to Genta’s previous Jumbo, connects seamlessly with the case, as does the five-holed bezel, lending it a touch of utility.

The 3505 isn’t well known among midsized iterations, despite being the first. Its short two-year production run (1983–85) and subtle differences from the 3506 contribute to its enigmatic appeal. Collectors have nicknamed it the “Skinny Ingy” due to its low-profile case and cal. 375 movement, measuring just 9mm and 4mm, respectively.

For once, however, the standout feature of this reference isn’t the case shape or bracelet integration—it’s the dial. The graph-paper finish is unique to the 3505 and 3506, and another charming detail is the pencil-shaped markers. A playful yet refined touch. Most 3505 examples feature a "Swiss Only" dial, but a few late-production pieces from 1985 are marked "Swiss Made."

The case and bracelet have been polished in the past, though not for some time. The bezel shows light patina, indicating minimal wear. The tritium markers remain intact, and there is no oxidation on the hands.

This example, having recently undergone a movement service by IWC, is running superbly at +3 seconds per day, 270 amplitude, with a beat error of 0.2. With its full 23 links, it will comfortably fit a 19cm wrist.
