The 1960s and ’70s were a golden era for sports chronographs, with numerous iconic models emerging from historic manufacturers such as Rolex, Omega, Breitling, and Universal Geneve. However, few would argue against Heuer being the king of utilitarian, sports-focused chronographs during this time. In particular, Heuer released an array of racing chronographs like the Autavia, Carrera, Camaro, Monaco, and Monza which remained iconic until this day.

The Monaco, in particular, is perhaps one of the most recognisable watch designs of all time. Originally released in 1969, the Monaco was amongst the first ever commercially-available automatic chronographs, featuring the Calibre 11. The daring square silhouette was made instantly iconic thanks to the charming Steve McQueen, who wore it in the 1971 film "Le Mans". The first Monacos featured a blue dial (1133B), whereas the present example, ref. 1133G with a metallic grey dial was released shortly after in 1972.

The watch has real presence for a vintage piece, at 40mm wide and a 14mm thickness, it’s a decent size by even modern standards. The present example was the first execution grey dial variation, and it has had a very easy life. The grey dial is fantastic, with no imperfections; all of the tritium lume plots are in tact on the dial and hands, and they have aged to an even, creamy patina. The case remains extremely full and sharp.

The watch has recently been serviced, and is running fantastically at +3 s/d, 265 amps, with a 0.3 ms beat error. It comes on a rare NOS original Corfam straps. A very special Heuer that is worthy of any serious collection.
