The Carrera was a model designed for exploits both on and off the race track, designed by Jack heuer himself, he was inspired by a conversation he had with the Rodriguez brothers, Pedro and Riccardo whilst at the Sebring 12-hour endurance race in 1962. They talked tales of the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico - essentially a Mexican Mille Miglia - but would you believe, even more deadly. After only four years the race was cancelled due to ongoing safety concerns, but in its short run solidified its legendary status among road races, and it clearly left a lasting impression on Jack.

The Carrera range was released the following year in 1963 and ran alongside the sportier but larger Autavia range that Jack Heuer had launched the year before. The conversation proved to have been fruitful and the Carrera was well received.

This particular example is the first execution 2448S with a thick gold plated finish and early 'Poly-Back' caseback. Nowadays gold plated finishes are around 5 microns thick, this is 20! The Gay Frères bracelet is made from rolled gold rather than plated, an offers reassuring heft. The condition overall is tremendous, though there is wear on the original crown as you would expect from a near 60 years of use, it could be re-plated easily - but truthfully we love the indication of age. The dial is clean and free from obvious marks, and the lume in both the hands and on the plots remain intact.

Powered by the simply stunning Valjoux 72 movement, which benefits from a recent service and as such runs well, within +5 seconds per day at a strong 240 degrees of amplitude and a minimal 0.3ms of beat error.

At this price point, especially when compared to the more expensive steel variant but remains similarly rare - it presents as a superb value proposition, and dare we say, a prettier one.
