You'd be forgiven, at first glance at least, for thinking this is an Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar - the 5548 - and you wouldn't be entirely incorrect. The Chopard 'Luna D'Oro' (Golden Moon) is a Perpetual Calendar from the same 'Golden-Age' of Neo-Vintage watches and features an almost-identical construction to its significantly more storied - and expensive - AP counterpart, and even shares a similar design language to the legendary Patek Philippe 3940. This Chopard therefore punches well above its weight-class, at a fraction of the price, without making any aesthetic sacrifices.
A masterful stroke in dial-design, this reference features a Day, Date, Month, Year, (complete with a 48 month leap year display) and Moon-phase, sat atop a blemish free white dial. As well as finding ample space for gorgeously minimal Gold numeral hour markers, its dial still remains entirely legible, un-fussy and an outright delight to look at. The hour and minute hand feature a blued-steel finish and are free from any imperfections. The sub-dial hands match the warm gold of the case and numerals.
The solid 18K yellow Gold case sits just 7mm off the wrist, thanks in part to the threadlike Piaget Calibre P-70 of which the movement in this watch is based.
We've paired this 1996 example with a slightly less dressy bespoke strap in light tan from The Strap Tailor - complete with the original solid Gold Chopard buckle - which we feel brings it well into the realms of a daily-wearable, but can still be dressed up on either a Black or Burgundy Genuine Chopard Alligator strap which, along with a padded button-down cloth, Chopard padded box and setting tool, also comes with the watch.
