The Basculante, launched in 1932, emerged roughly a year after the JLC Reverso. Unlike the Reverso, which was designed to protect the watch during polo matches, the Basculante was crafted to safeguard the fragile glass used at the time and, quite simply, to exude an air of sophistication.

This watch employs the 'Cabriolet' system, designed by Spécialités Horlogères, who were also responsible for the sliding Reverso mechanism. With a simple flick of the sapphire cabochon, the case can be flipped around in a matter of seconds. For those moments when you're feeling particularly refined, you can remove the watch, place it on your desk, elevate it to the upright position (see picture 3), and admire it as an elegant desk clock.

Cartier revived the Basculante range in the late 1990s, discontinuing it in the mid-2000s. Currently, Cartier does not produce the Basculante, which contributes to the model's resurgence in popularity. This particular example is a pristine steel variant in the larger 28x38mm size with a mechanical wind movement. An interesting fact: the Basculante was the first Tank variant Cartier produced entirely in steel.

This watch is offered on its own, featuring a Cartier tanned strap with a deployment clasp. The movement is running well at +7 seconds per day, with an amplitude of 250 and a beat error of 0.2.
