The Cartier 9705 was originally offered in either Horizontal or - as per this example - 'Verticale' specification. Earning the name thanks to the longer vertical sides of its stepped, gold case. The Gondole is a far rarer sight than the more common Tank, Santos and Ceinture of the same period and represents a surprisingly large watch for the brand - who are known at least in their vintage models for modest and understated sizing.

Although the case may feel like a step out of the Cartier-norm, the dial design, typography, hands and crown are still distinct icons from the brand; its 'Blue Cabochon' topped crown, striking italicised roman numerals and heat-blued hands are stalwarts from the Cartier manifesto, and are simply given ample breathing room with this 34mm wide case. There is however, some detail-delights worth noting, such as the 'Paris' signature at six o'clock - a nod to the brands place of origin and references the sale location being the legendary flagship boutique; Paris Place Vendôme.

The 9705 is powered by the robust manual winding Calibre 97B which runs at a remarkable -2 seconds per-day at strong amplitude, benefitting from a 2024 service from Cartier as confirmed by its service paperwork.

Though the Gondole Verticale may not be the most iconic of the Cartier lineup, it represents an opportunity to secure an exceedingly rare reference that on the Green Suede pairing from our friends at The Strap Tailor, is sure to be a conversation piece at formal events and even as a daily wearer.
