The 1960s and 70s were a golden era for sports chronographs, seeing some of the most iconic models, such as the Rolex Daytona, Omega Speedmaster, Heuer Carrera, and Universal Genève Compax. Amidst these legendary names, chronographs from another top manufacturer, Breitling, often fall under the radar and still represent great value on the market today.
Breitling introduced the ‘Top Time’ line in 1964, aiming to attract young, active professionals. This marked a departure from the brand’s more technical models, such as the Navitimer and Chronomat. Initially launched as an entry-level chronograph featuring the Venus 178 movement, the 810 came with several dial variants, this Panda variant being the most desirable.
The present example is in absolutely superb condition. The dial (all tritium lume plots intact) is spotless, the hands are unmarked and a superbly sharp case hasn't seen a polish. The 38mm diameter steel case, large for its time, wears fantastically on the wrist and gives it a modern, bold, yet elegant look, despite being born in 1974.
The movement has been serviced in the last year and is still running smoothly at +5 s/d, with 275 amps and 0.0 beat error.
A fantastic 1970s chronograph with rich heritage at an affordable price.
