Amongst the lovers of vintage chronographs, few would argue that it is not Heuer, Rolex, or Omega, but Breitling that was the most impactful in shaping the world of sports chronographs as we know it today. The most famous is, of course, the Navitimer, originally developed in 1952 and still remains the brand’s flagship model.
However, Breitling's chronograph heritage goes much deeper - the Premier line was introduced in the 1940s as a more upmarket and refined alternative to the brand's military and aviation timepieces. The present example, powered by the Cal. 787, is housed in an elegant rose gold case (which was extremely uncommon in the 40’s) and features a sleek and classy 3 register dial design.
Whilst many chronographs from this era are prone to moisture damage, this watch was fortunate to have been kept in incredible condition. The case remains full and sharp, and the original dial remains very keen. The original syringe style hands still have their radium lume intact. Breitling supplied a new leather and 18k gold buckle as well as a movement service which is still under factory warranty until early next year. A new crown was also supplied. The movement runs very well at +6 sd, 255 amps with a beat error of 0.4
Its amazing to think this watch will be celebrating its 80th birthday next year.
