It’s no secret that Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet completely transformed Blancpain after acquiring it in 1981. Over the following decade, they produced some of the most extraordinary watches under the Blancpain name—creations that would come to be known as the Six Masterpieces. From ultra-thin perpetual calendars like this example to flying tourbillons, they redefined the brand, culminating in its acquisition by the Swatch Group in 1992.
Around 1986, following the release of the 6595 Complete Calendar Moonphase and the ultra-thin 0021, Blancpain introduced their first Perpetual Calendar, the 5395. These were offered in several precious metals, steel, and bimetal configurations. This particular example is the 1318 variant, denoting a bimetal case and a white dial.
These watches truly have the wow factor in the flesh. Often overlooked in favor of more obvious haute horlogerie brands, they offer all the style, elegance, and mechanical craftsmanship—often for significantly less. The dial on this example has begun to develop a creamy patina, especially noticeable in person. The case remains in excellent condition and has not been over-polished.
The movement is running superbly following a recent service, performing at 0 seconds per day, 283 amplitude, and a 0.2ms beat error. We’ve paired the watch, along with its original gold buckle, with a beautiful navy Saffiano leather strap. We've been fortunate to have handled a few of these just in the last few weeks - such beauties.
